The south-facing balconies are perhaps the most iconic feature of Paimio. Each patient room opens onto a narrow, continuous balcony, allowing the bed to be wheeled out so the patient could lie in the sun and fresh air. The balconies are shielded by a solid parapet and a canopy, which blocks the low winter sun but admits the higher summer sun—a passive solar design that maximises exposure when it is most beneficial. The balconies also create a rhythmic, dynamic facade, which has been compared to the deck of an ocean liner, a machine for travel, but here it is a machine for healing.

Colour Psychology and Sensory Calibration

Aalto was one of the first architects to systematically apply colour psychology to a building. The entire colour scheme of Paimio is based on the needs of the patients. In the common rooms, where patients gathered, he used bright, warm colours like yellow and orange to stimulate social interaction and appetite. The dining room has a ceiling painted a deep red, which in the dim light of a Finnish winter creates a warm, intimate atmosphere, encouraging patients to eat—vital for those who were often underweight.

In contrast, the treatment rooms were painted in cool blues and greens, which are calming and reduce anxiety. The corridors are painted in a neutral tone, with a colour-coded stripe at the doorways to help patients find their way, an early wayfinding system. Even the lighting was carefully considered: Aalto designed special light fixtures that cast a soft, diffused glow, avoiding glare that could strain tired eyes.

The interiors use birch wood for the furniture and fittings, including the famous Paimio chair, designed by Aalto for the tuberculosis patients. The chair is made of bent plywood, which allows it to be lightweight, flexible, and easy to clean. Its angled back and seat are designed to maximise comfort and promote breathing—a patient sitting in the chair could lean back and take deep breaths of air, which was part of the therapy.

The building is composed of two main wings: the seven-storey patient wing, which faces south, and the lower, north-facing wing that contains the common rooms and staff areas. The wings are connected by a glazed circulation tower, which houses the stairs and lifts. This separation of functions was not just practical; it was symbolic. The patient wing is the hero, the focus of all attention, while the staff are relegated to the background. The form of the building, with its stepped massing and horizontal balconies, is both functional and expressive. It seems to stretch out, as if to catch the sun, and its clean lines convey a sense of order and calm.

Why Paimio Still Matters: A Timeless Benchmark

Eighty years after its completion, Paimio Sanatorium remains a touchstone for healthcare design. Its principles—patient-centred design, the use of colour and light for psychological well-being, the integration of nature, and the careful attention to every detail of the user's experience—are now widely acknowledged as essential to good healthcare architecture. In an age of sterile, impersonal hospitals, Paimio reminds us that architecture can be a therapeutic tool in itself.

The building has been carefully restored and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site, open to visitors. It is not a museum, but a living lesson. As we face new health challenges, from an ageing population to the psychological toll of modern life, Paimio's message is more relevant than ever: that the built environment can and should be a partner in healing.
