Designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen with Friis & Moltke and completed in 2019, Anstalten was built as Greenland's first purpose-built correctional facility, replacing a practice of sending Greenlandic prisoners to serve time in Denmark. Its architects designed it explicitly as a 'humane prison,' arranged as a cluster of Corten-steel-clad buildings meant to feel more like a village than an institution, deliberately open to the surrounding landscape rather than closed off from it.
