Icelandic Christians seeking independence from state religious control founded this Free Lutheran congregation — the first of its kind in Iceland — in 1899, building their church in 1901 and consecrating it in 1903. Architect Rögnvaldur Ólafsson extended the building two years later, giving it the white facade, green roof and square-based, octagonal-topped tower it retains today. The congregation was an early advocate for women's suffrage and later LGBT rights, and the church's acoustics have made it a favoured venue for classical concerts as well as worship.
