State Architect Guðjón Samúelsson received the commission for Iceland's largest church in 1937, fascinated by the shapes that form as lava cools into basalt columns — a fascination that shaped the church's soaring, ribbed silhouette. Construction began in 1945 and unfolded in stages over four decades: the crypt was consecrated in 1948, the steeple and side wings finished in 1974, and the nave finally completed for the full church's consecration on 26 October 1986. At 74.5 metres, it's the second-tallest building in Iceland and has become one of the country's defining national symbols.
