Landakotskirkja

French priests Bernard Bernard and Jean-Baptiste Baudoin bought the Landakot farmstead in the early 19th century and built a small chapel there in 1864, laying the groundwork for the return of Catholicism to Iceland after the Reformation. Guðjón Samúelsson designed its much larger successor, the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King, built 1925–29 from grey basalt stone and topped with a distinctively flat top rather than a conventional spire. Consecrated on 23 July 1929, it was the largest church in Iceland at the time and remains the seat of the Catholic Church in Iceland today.
