Gothenburg City Theatre

Carl Bergsten designed the City Theatre at Götaplatsen, opening it in 1934 in a style that blended 1920s neoclassicism with the emerging functionalism and Art Deco sensibilities of the 1930s — critics at the time actually dismissed it as old-fashioned, since the International Style had already broken through at Stockholm's landmark 1930 exhibition. Its geometric interior detailing and high-quality materials won over reviewers regardless, who praised the auditorium as intimate and democratic. Now a protected listed building, it remains a working theatre at the heart of Gothenburg's cultural square.
