Lilla Bommen

Ralph Erskine, working with White Arkitekter, designed this 83-metre, 23-storey postmodern tower on the banks of the Göta älv, completed for construction firm Skanska in 1989. Its red-and-white colour scheme and tapering form quickly earned it a string of unofficial nicknames from Gothenburg locals — Läppstiftet ('the Lipstick') is the one that stuck, though it's also been called Vattenståndet and Legohuset along the way. Whatever you call it, it remains one of the most recognisable silhouettes on the city's waterfront.
