The Catholic congregation bought this plot at Heden in 1928, but construction of the church itself didn't begin until the foundation stone was laid on 31 October 1937; the first high mass followed on 2 October 1938. Architect Carl Rosell designed a three-aisled brick basilica with a tall bell tower, its style recalling Helsinki's Olaus Petri Church, and the mosaic covering the choir's apse — a gift from Pope Pius XII depicting Christ as King — is the largest of its kind in the Nordic region.
