An architectural competition ahead of the 1958 FIFA World Cup, which Sweden hosted, called for a stadium that could serve far more than just football — the winning design, by Fritz Jaenecke and Sten Samuelsson, took inspiration from Helsinki's Olympic Stadium and gave Ullevi its distinctive elliptical bowl and sweeping roofline. It opened on 29 May 1958 with a 2-2 draw between Sweden and a Gothenburg city select side, and visiting journalists at the time called it one of the world's most beautiful sports venues. Still Sweden's largest stadium today, it remains a genuine landmark on Gothenburg's skyline.
