Det Kongelige Teater

Founded in 1748, the Royal Danish Theatre's first building came from court architect Nicolai Eigtved, who also designed Amalienborg Palace; C.F. Harsdorff enlarged it in 1774 to seat 800. The grand building on Kongens Nytorv seen today dates from 1874, designed by William Dahlerup and Ove Pedersen in a Neoclassical style with a commanding columned facade. Over the past two decades the theatre has expanded far beyond this original building — Henning Larsen's Opera House opened in 2005, and the Royal Danish Playhouse by Boje Lundgaard and Lene Tranberg followed at Nyhavn in 2008.
