Vor Frue Kirke

A church has stood on this site since at least 1187, but British bombardment during the 1807 Battle of Copenhagen destroyed its predecessor, with British gunners reportedly using the old tower for artillery range practice before it burned. Christian Frederik Hansen — sometimes called the 'Danish Palladio' for his debt to Palladio and antique Roman and Greek architecture — designed the current Neoclassical cathedral, built from 1817 and consecrated in 1829. Inside, Bertel Thorvaldsen's statues of Christ and the twelve apostles, completed in 1839, are considered among his finest work.
