Fire destroyed the original building on this Rigensgade site in 1759, and its replacement — a royal textile factory built in 1760 by Georg Vollmeister and extended in 1777–79 — still stands today as a 48-bay Neoclassical structure. When the textile works relocated to Usserød in 1815, architect Peder Friis converted the vacated complex for hospital use, leading to the Garrison Hospital's formal establishment in 1818. It served Copenhagen's military garrison for over a century before a new hospital at Tagensvej replaced it in 1928.
