Bergen mayor John Lund first proposed a cable car up Mount Fløyen in 1895, but construction didn't begin until 1914, and the funicular finally opened on 15 January 1918. Its two cars, Rødhette (Little Red Riding Hood) and Blåmann (Blue Man), were named through a public competition, and the 848-metre line has carried passengers 320 metres above sea level continuously ever since, surviving into the present day through repeated modernisation.
