One of Bergen architect Ole Landmark's major works, Forum was Norway's largest independent cinema when it opened on 4 October 1946 with 1,140 seats, its functionalist facade forming part of a wider Landmark-designed streetscape around Danmarks plass. Construction had actually begun a decade earlier, in 1936, but stalled during the German occupation, when the unfinished building was requisitioned by occupying forces; it stood as an empty shell as late as 1940 before finally being completed after the war. The cinema closed after nearly 60 years of operation in the mid-2000s and reopened in August 2019 following a complete renovation, named one of the '10 wonders of Western Norway' in 2004.
