Franciscan friars established a monastery at Vågsbunnen in the 1240s, and King Magnus Lagabøte — drawn to the order's ideals of poverty and care for the sick — donated heavily toward enlarging its church from 1277 onward, intending it as his own eventual burial site. Little remains of the original monastery buildings today except the church itself, which has been rebuilt and expanded repeatedly since the friars' dissolution in 1537. It now stands as Bergen Cathedral, the building pictured here.
