Kvarven fort

Built between 1895 and 1899 as Norwegian-Swedish relations soured toward the eventual dissolution of their union, Kvarven Fort was one of several coastal defences raised around Bergen's harbour approaches, joined by a torpedo battery in 1902. It saw real combat during the German invasion of April 1940, when its guns helped disable the warships Bremen and Carl Peters as they attempted to force the fjord. Decommissioned in 1961, the fort reopened to the public in 1993 as a preserved historic site.
