First recorded in 1309 as 'Blansvet,' Blangstedgaard began as a fortified manor belonging to the bishops of Odense, used mainly as a summer residence — bishop Jens Andersen Beldenak, who played a role in Christian II's 1520 conquest of Sweden, was among its more notable occupants. The Crown took the manor over after the Reformation in 1536, and it was burned during the Swedish wars of 1658–60 before eventually passing to private owners, becoming a model farm under Ernst Albrecht Lüders from 1822. In 1988, its land hosted the international 'Byg og Bo' housing exhibition, where architects across genres tried their hand at experimental housing design.
