Hans Christian Andersen lived in this cramped three-room house at Munkemøllestræde from age two to fourteen, between 1807 and 1819, during a childhood marked by poverty. The attached museum, opened in 1930, recreates the family's early 19th-century living quarters, with one room refurbished specifically to match the description Andersen gave of the apartment in his own autobiographies. The courtyard behind the house, where he spent hours as a child, is often credited as a formative influence on his storytelling.
