Redemptorist priests arrived from Austria in 1899 and began raising funds — with substantial help from Austria and Germany — to build Odense's Catholic parish church. The foundation stone was laid on 21 October 1906, and the still-unfinished building was consecrated on 25 October 1908, dedicated jointly to Our Lady, Saint Alban and Saint Canute. German architect Ludwig Schneider of Breslau designed the neo-Gothic church, its tower rising 54 metres, with stained glass by Georg Schneider of Regensburg — and the parish has remained a focal point for the city's immigrant communities ever since, from its original German and Polish congregants to a growing number of Vietnamese Catholics today.
