A church has stood on this site for over 900 years, first mentioned in 1095 as a travertine building housing the remains of King Canute IV, murdered in 1086 and later canonised. Fire destroyed that Romanesque structure along with the rest of the city, and the current Brick Gothic cathedral rose in its place from 1300, reaching completion around 1499. The crypt where Canute and his brother Benedict now rest remains the most visited part of the building.
