Sct. Hans Kirke

First mentioned in 1295 and built by the Knights Hospitaller — the monastic Order of Saint John — this red-brick Gothic church once served as the centre of Sct. Hans Kloster, a monastery recorded by 1329. An outdoor pulpit on its south side is thought to have let the church hold services for lepers and outlaws barred from entering the building itself. Little of the original structure survived a 1636 rebuild and two later restorations, most recently in 1997–98, though a Romanesque baptismal font remains — and Hans Christian Andersen was baptised here.
