Ledaal

Built between 1799 and 1803 as a summer residence for merchant Gabriel Schanche Kielland, Ledaal was the first house in Stavanger built of brick — shipped in specially from the Netherlands. Its rectangular two-storey form, half-hip roof and mix of Baroque and Rococo detailing draw clearly on Danish eighteenth-century architecture. The Kielland family used it as a summer home for 60 years, and after Stavanger municipality bought it in 1936, a 1949 restoration turned it into what remains today: the King of Norway's official residence in Stavanger, alongside its role as a museum.
