A wooden bridge on stone piers first crossed the Nidelva here in 1685, funded by Christian V as part of the city's post-fire rebuilding and guarded by a gate that stood until 1816. The bridge seen today dates from 1861, rebuilt by civil engineer Carl Adolf Dahl with lifting portals that let larger boats pass beneath — mechanisms removed in 1950 when the bridge was widened. Locals call it the 'Portal of Happiness' after a popular waltz, and it remains one of the most photographed views in Trondheim.
