Østmarka hospital

Østmarka opened in stages between 1904 and 1926 as Trondheim's new centralised psychiatric hospital, taking over from the older Tronka asylum, which the municipality acquired and closed once patients had transferred to the new facility in 1919. It has remained in continuous use as a psychiatric hospital for over a century, merging its acute department with Brøset Hospital's in 2007 under St. Olav's Hospital Trust, and more recent additions have deliberately kept new construction low-key within the site's protected, park-like grounds.
