An architectural competition for a new water tower in Malmö's Hyllie district was won by the Stockholm firm Kjessler & Mannerstråle with a proposal called 'Drabant,' completed in 1973 for 8.6 million kronor. The finished tower, shaped like a flying saucer and standing 62 metres tall, holds over 10,000 cubic metres of water and has become one of the city's more recognisable symbols — lit blue most nights, and in other colours for special occasions. A restaurant once operated inside it, until relocating in 1996.
