Stockholm's only surviving medieval monastery church, founded at the end of the 13th century, has served as the Swedish royal family's burial church for centuries — Magnus Ladulås, who died in 1290, was the first king interred here, in the chancel before the altar. Its Karolinska tomb holds Charles XII in a black marble sarcophagus, one addition among many royal tombs added over the centuries, including the later Bernadotte tomb. Gustaf V and Queen Victoria, who died in 1950 and 1930 respectively, were the last royals buried here before space ran out and the family's burial site moved to Haga Park.
