Ferdinand Boberg, one of the most prolific architects working in Stockholm around 1900, designed the brick main building of Värtaverket, inaugurated on 18 December 1903 to supply the city with electricity via steam-powered turbines fuelled by coke from the neighbouring gasworks. The plant later became the first in Stockholm's district-heating network in 1969, and has continued expanding ever since — today it's the largest urban biofuel-fired heating plant in the world, a modern function layered onto Boberg's century-old brick shell.
