Founded in 1859 as Denmark's oldest public art museum outside Copenhagen, ARoS moved into its current home in April 2004 — a ten-storey cube designed by Schmidt Hammer Lassen conceived as a 'mountain' rising through the city, with each level dedicated to a different part of the art experience across 20,000 square metres. In 2011, Olafur Eliasson's circular rooftop walkway 'Your Rainbow Panorama' extended the building further skyward, its rainbow-tinted glass panels shifting the colour of the Aarhus skyline depending on where a visitor stands inside it.
