The Danish public funded this palace as a wedding gift for Crown Prince Christian (later King Christian X) and Princess Alexandrine, and architect Hack Kampmann completed it between 1899 and 1902 in a restrained, classically influenced style typical of Scandinavian royal taste at the time. Christian and Alexandrine were the first royals to use it as a summer residence, a tradition that continued through Frederik IX and on to Queen Margrethe II, who has used it as a summer and Christmas residence since 1967. The estate itself traces back to 1661, when a debt-ridden King Frederik III ceded the land to Dutch merchant Gabriel Marselis, whose family name it still carries.
