Though the museum organisation dates to 1963, the building it now occupies was designed by architect Helmer Stenros and completed in 1981 as part of the wider 'Project 77' redevelopment of central Mariehamn. Stenros's design was conceived to sit alongside the town's historical collections rather than compete with them, and the art museum still shares its building with the Åland Cultural History Museum beside the town square.
