The main parish church of Mariehamn was designed by Lars Sonck, one of the most influential architects in early twentieth-century Finland, and completed in 1927. Inside, painted wooden ceiling panels by Bruno Tuukkanen and gold-toned mosaics behind the altar depict scenes from the life of Christ, while a decorative ship model hanging from the ceiling nods to the town's seafaring identity. The church's 37-stop organ was built in stages between 1969 and 1982, reflecting decades of gradual expansion after the building's original completion.
