Drawn up by a young Lars Sonck in 1895 and completed the following year, the old customs and packing house was reportedly Mariehamn's first stone building aside from small workshops and smithies. Its Neo-Gothic detailing sets it apart from the wooden townscape around it — a deliberate foreign accent among the timber row houses that otherwise define the old town. Mid-century renovations extended the building eastward and replaced its original arched windows, though its silhouette remains distinct from anything else nearby.
