Architect
Carl Johan von Heideken
Completed
1876

Built in 1876 to a design by provincial architect C. J. von Heideken and constructed by the shipowner and town founder Nikolai Sittkoff, this was originally Mariehamn's elementary school, containing two classrooms, a library, and a gymnasium. It stands between Västra and Östra Esplanadgatan, among the oldest surviving buildings in a town largely rebuilt and renewed since. Despite the name it carries today, its original purpose was educational rather than administrative.
