The yellow school building that anchors much of Mariehamn's cityscape was designed by architect Jac Ahrenberg in a Swedish manor-house style with Art Nouveau detailing, and taken into use in 1903. Its carved stone entrance portal, likely produced by Stigell's stonemasonry in Helsinki after Ahrenberg's design, is often described as the most elaborate on Åland. A further wing designed by Torsten Montell was added in 1930, and the building has been protected under the local town plan since 1995.
