Hilda Hongell designed the Mission Church in 1896, one of dozens of buildings she left across Mariehamn during a career that made her Finland's first female master builder. Of the roughly 98 buildings she designed for the town, only about 44 still stand, which makes each survivor — this one included — a direct link to a formative figure in Åland's architectural history. Hongell continued designing houses for Mariehamn from an office in Helsinki even after relocating there in 1912.
