Designed by Jonas Cedercreutz, the museum building takes the form of a ship's bow cutting into the shoreline — a literal architectural metaphor for the maritime history it houses. Since 1957, its centrepiece has been the four-masted barque Pommern, permanently moored in the adjacent Western Harbour as a floating extension of the museum's exhibits on Åland's age of sail. Few buildings on the islands make their subject matter as physically explicit as this one does.
