Cable Factory

Wäinö Gustaf Palmqvist, an architect known chiefly for industrial and commercial commissions, designed the Cable Factory for the Finnish Cable Works in Salmisaari; it was built in three stages between 1939 and 1954, with cable production beginning in the finished plant in 1943. In 1967 Finnish Cable Works merged with the Finnish Rubber Works and Nokia Ab to form the modern Nokia corporation, making this one of the buildings where that company's industrial roots were laid. The factory closed in the late 1980s and has since been converted into studio and gallery space for artists, along with several small museums.
