Old Market Hall

Gustaf Nyström designed Helsinki's Old Market Hall after studying covered-market construction in other European capitals, and it opened on the South Harbour esplanade in 1889, a year later than planned owing to delays in cement deliveries. The structure combines a red-brick exterior with an iron frame, and originally held around 120 stalls and six shops around a central gallery; one of its more talked-about original features was heated toilets, a rarity for public buildings of the period. It remains in use as a food hall today and is the oldest surviving market hall in Finland.
