Marmoripalatsi

Eliel Saarinen designed the Marble Palace in 1916 for the mill owner August Nilsson Keirkner and his wife Lydia, as a home for their private art collection in the Kaivopuisto district; construction began in 1917 and finished the following year, shortly after Keirkner's death, and Lydia moved in alone. It was only the second building in Helsinki to be clad entirely in marble, sourced from the Förby quarry in western Finland, and its interiors mix classical proportion with the ornament of Viennese Art Nouveau and Finnish National Romanticism. The Waldens bought the house in 1937, and the Finnish state acquired it in 1949 for use as a courthouse, which it remains today.
