Töölö Church

Hilding Ekelund won the design competition for Töölö Church in 1930, working in the restrained Nordic Classicism that marked the transition from 1920s classicism toward Finnish functionalism. The building was originally constructed as a parish hall rather than a consecrated church, and only took on that role in 1941 once Töölö and its northern surroundings were split off as a separate parish. Its plain white basilica form and prominent freestanding bell tower have made it a defining landmark of the Töölö district.
