Hakasalmi Villa

Ernst Lohrmann, a German-born architect working in Helsinki, designed Villa Hakasalmi in the Empire style as a summer residence for the senator Carl Johan Walleen, with the villa built in 1844–1846 and its side wings added in 1847. It later passed to Walleen's stepdaughter Aurora Karamzin, who sold it to the City of Helsinki in 1896 on condition she could keep living there, which she did until her death in 1902. Following her death the villa housed the National Museum's historical collections until that museum's own purpose-built home opened across the street in 1916, and it now operates as a City Museum exhibition venue.
