Merikasarmi

Carl Ludvig Engel, the German-born architect responsible for laying out much of Helsinki's neoclassical centre after it became the Grand Duchy's capital in 1812, designed Merikasarmi as a naval barracks completed in 1820 on the Katajanokka waterfront. It formed part of Engel's broader plan for the new capital's institutional buildings alongside the Senate Square ensemble, and its long, symmetrical waterfront facade has since made it a recognisable government building, now home to the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
