Viljo Revell designed the Palace Hotel to open in time for the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics, giving the city a modern hotel building for international visitors just as it was building out its Olympic-era architecture more broadly. Its top-floor restaurant, with sweeping views over the South Harbour, became known as a fashionable vantage point over the Olympic city, and the building is counted among Revell's earlier major Helsinki commissions, before his city-centre plan and Toronto city hall work later in the decade.
