Eliel Saarinen designed the Käpylä sports park in 1915 as part of his broader plan for the Käpylä garden suburb, one of several commissions in which he applied Finnish National Romantic ideas to everyday civic infrastructure rather than only to monuments and stations. The stadium and its surrounding grounds were built to serve the new garden-city district being laid out around it, reflecting an early-twentieth-century belief that recreational facilities were as central to good urban planning as housing itself.
