Founded in 1841 on the banks of the Akerselva river, Akers mekaniske Verksted grew into one of Oslo's most important industrial employers, producing steam engines, turbines and eventually ships after relocating to Pipervika in 1854 — the site where Aker Brygge stands today. The shipyard closed in 1982, but its name lives on in Aker ASA, one of Norway's largest industrial and offshore holding companies, tracing its roots directly back to this nineteenth-century workshop.
