Founded in 1854 by Jacob Smith Jarmann, J. G. Jarmann and Prosper Nørbech, Nylands mekaniske Verksted grew from a small engineering works into Norway's largest shipyard by around 1900, employing over a thousand people at its peak on the Bjørvika headland. The yard operated on this site until 1971, and in 2008 the Oslo Opera House opened directly on the former shipyard grounds — one waterfront industry giving way to another kind of landmark entirely.
