New Nissen's Girls' School

Commissioned in 1897 by then-owner Bernhard Cathrinus Pauss and built the following year, this school building at Niels Juels gate 56 was designed by Henrik Nissen — son of the school's founder, educator Hartvig Nissen. Nissen's Girls' School was the first institution in Norway to let women sit the examen artium, the university entrance exam, and later became the first Norwegian school with a pupil's council, in 1919. It's known today as Hartvig Nissen School, one of the country's most established secondary schools.
