Founded in 1890 by priest and editor Hartvig Halvorsen, Diakonhjemmet began as a small nursing home where the first ten deacon students trained in a five-year programme combining nursing, social work, and theology — the country's second nursing education, and its first open to men. What started as a single monastery-like building has since grown into a full campus of hospital, educational and research facilities, now run as VID Specialized University following a 2016 merger with three other colleges.
