Scandinavia's largest museum opened at Vestbanen in June 2022, designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk — a practice formed specifically to complete the project, combining Berlin's Kleihues + Kleihues with Naples-based architect Klaus Schuwerk, who led the design. Its restrained stone-clad exterior sits deliberately between Oslo City Hall and the Nobel Peace Centre, while inside, a glass-and-marble 'Light Hall' crowns the building and gives the museum its most recognisable feature. The collection itself is far older — it traces back to the National Gallery, founded in 1842 — but this building is a genuinely new structure, not a renovation.
