Opened in 1900 opposite the National Theatre — which had itself opened only the year before — Theatercaféen has operated inside the Hotel Continental for well over a century under the same family's ownership across four generations. Architect Hans Gabriel Finne restored the café to its original Art Nouveau appearance in 1971, working from old photographs to guide the reconstruction of fixtures and furniture, and the floor still holds its distinctive surface of over 100,000 small pieces of linoleum. More than eighty portraits of the café's longtime regulars now line its walls.
